Artificial intelligence in communication

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are transforming many industries, communication included. AI can rapidly gather and assess data, handle routine tasks, and be always available in ways that would otherwise be impossible.

AI without humans involved does not make for great communication, but when AI is paired with human partners, each doing what they do best and what adds the most value, the results can be very beneficial.

Here are some examples.

Nursing patient care

AI can hear a voice request from a patient and assess what is needed to available nurses can respond appropriately. Meanwhile the AI is learning about this specific patient.

Chatbots

AI-enabled chatbots can help people through several layers of typical problem-solving situations such as HR benefits questions, technology help, and archived information searches.

Repetitive tasks

AI can handle routine, repetitive tasks such as data entry and cold-calling more rapidly than a human can, freeing humans for what matters: personal engagement with customers and colleagues.

Virtual assistants

These can take many forms, but AI-powered assistants can help with calendar scheduling and keeping you on track with your project tasks. The more the machine learns about you, the better the assistant it will be.

Data collection on the line

AI can monitor nearly everything in manufacturing. The software can anticipate – and communicate about – supply chain problems, identify an operational weak link prior to failure, and prevent injuries before they happen.

Internal comms campaigns

AI can connect with HR systems so that versioned internal messaging can be delivered to the right employee at the right time in the right format for their situation, without human intervention.

As a consumer, a health care patient, and an employee, I’ve witnessed nearly all of the above examples in action and find AI-powered communication to be a huge benefit to me personally and to the organizations I engage with. Things will just become more exciting in the future.

One final question: How long has it been since you were absolutely certain whether you were chatting via text with or human or a robot?
